Dirt Bike Apparel

Proper dirt bike apparel is an essential part of safe riding. It doesn’t really matter if you just ride once in a while or in the woods or on the farm ect. You never know when you could clip a tree or catch a rut and get tossed off into the weeds! In fact most accidents happen when the rider is just “messing around” and thinks “I’m just going to ride to the woods and back” or “I’m just going to putt around in the yard”. Big mistake!

So before you spend your money on dirt bike apparel, read through some of the different reviews and recommendations we have listed here. We will list things for the average rider in order of importance along with more advanced protection for the racer.

Helmets

The most important dirt bike apparel, the helmet, is with out a doubt a key safety concern when riding dirt bikes. Serious head injuries are almost always a reality in a crash with a helmet less rider. I good quality helmet should be top priority in your pursuit of this sport.

Many people go for the 80 -100 dollar helmet and I guess they have there place, but my son, and I, found out the hard way. My son went over the bars during practice at our local track and suffered a mild concussion. Fortunately he was ok, but I wonder if his 129 dollar helmet, at the time, had something to do with it. After his recovery we purchased a higher end helmet to see if the quality and fit where any better. Well, we where amazed at the difference in fit, weight, and even the ease of clean ability that an extra 100 bucks meant!

Goggles

Goggles not only protect your eyes but can help you see the dirt better. Ever wonder why you see motocross riders pulling off a tear-off almost every lap on even a fairly clean track? It’s not just because there sponsor gives them to them for free it’s because perfectly clear vision allows riders to see every rut or ridge in the dirt. This helps them keep there focus on the terrain ahead as well as eliminates any “surprises” from the track.

Neck Braces

There has been a significant advance in neck protection in the last few years by the Leatt Corporation. With there global headquarters located in Nevada USA, Dr. Chris Leatt, the inventor, overseas research and development in South Africa which is where the company originated. The neck brace system came from Dr. Leatt's medical knowledge, his history as a motorcycle racer and the many neck injuries he has witnessed over the years. My son uses a Leatt and comments all the time on how well it fits. He claims that after his first hour of riding he doesn’t even know it’s there! There are much cheaper neck supports on the market, but if you race, you’re crazy not to use a Leatt!

Find out the full story from the companies website, or go here to get pricing and availability. The Leatt is sold exclusively through on-line merchants.

Boots

Dirt Bike Boots although usually 100 plus dollars with some as much as 500 are often put on the back burner because of there price. If you will notice I listed boots 4th here, for a reason. Your ankles, shins, and feet take a ton of abuse on a dirt bike and it takes more than a standard work boot to protect these body parts correctly.

Ride Apparel

Dirt bike apparel is usually sold as what is known as “combo’s”, which is the pants, shirt and dirt bike gloves, and are made from specialized materials designed to perform and fit at there best while you are in a riding position. You can buy all of these separately, but they are usually packaged together at a discount. We would recommend at the very least getting a good pair of pants as they have leather wear and heat zones sewed in to strategic area’s.

Body Armor

Not really what we would call dirt bike apparel but we have made this category for what the name implies, “armor for the body”. If you have ever taken a spill on your bike you probably got up thinking “Man, I wish I had on some elbow pads or some shoulder protection”! Well one of the often overlooked items is a kidney belt! They are usually pretty inexpensive and can really save you in a bad fall or worse yet, getting run over in a first turn crash! I make my son wear one, since he races, but fortunately he is usually out front going into turn one.
