The Dirt Bike Helmet: Don’t take the Cheep Route!
As I mentioned earlier my son’s dirt bike helmet may have contributed to his concussion! A lot of times when you first start out riding dirt bikes, there is so much to buy, helmets, goggles, boots, and Oh yes, the bike itself! So you suddenly go into “Let’s save some money mode!” Let’s see, I can buy these goggles cheaper here, and this website has boots for a good deal, and one hundred what! For a helmet! Well, here lies the problem! Make sure you go for a helmet with some REAL quality, because there is a difference! So let me explain some of the differences we have found in the helmets we have researched, and worn, for the last few years.

First Things First!
So what do all of those little stickers and ratings mean on the back of most quality helmets? Bottom line is this, the Snell rating is the main rating because they do rating world wide. There are also ratings such as DOT, which is Department of Transportation, as well as Europe’s ECE 22.05 which is a standard 50 plus countries and the BS which is the British Standard for helmet ratings. But look for the highest Snell rating you can find. Snell and D.O.T. have extensive test data on the highest G-force the human head can take and although not crystal clear, the common fact is the higher the g-force the worse the brain trauma. This depends on age, but for the most part 300 plus G’s is the upper limit. Snell leads the pack here with a 2 strike test. The first consists a hemispherical chunk of stainless steel about the size of an orange dropped at about 10 feet onto the helmet. Then it is followed by a second hit at about 8ft, and to pass, the helmet is not allowed to pass on more than 300 G’s to the head form inside the helmet with either of these drops.
So Who Leads the Way?
Although good quality dirt bike helmet, brands like AFX, AGV, and ANSWER that all make helmets for the budget minded there is a real difference from the higher ends, like ARAI, BELL, FOX, SIXSIXONE, TROY LEE DESIGNS and ONE INDUSTRIES. But with all helmets FIT should take the lead role. You want your helmet to fit snug but not super tight in any one area. Your new helmet will “settle in” a bit to your head so keep this in mind, that it is normal for all helmets to become a little looser as you wear them.
