Dirt Bike Tires – So Many Choices!
The correct dirt bike tires can make a huge difference in the handling of your bike. If you are a racer then you are well aware that “dirt” isn’t just “dirt”. A tire designed specifically for the type of terrain you are riding on can seriously affect the handling of your bike, both in a good or a bad way! For instance soft muddy or sandy conditions require a harder compound which helps the tire clean out better. “*** Tip***" Run a higher air pressure for softer terrain, say 14-16psi and a lower pressure, about 10-12 on harder terrain. The high pressure helps clean the tread and the lower pressure conforms to hard pack better, therefore giving additional traction.
Let’s Look at the Choices
Maxxis
offers three main offroad tires - the IT, SI, and SX series. Well the SX series is pretty obvious, it was developed for the Supercross and Arenacross series. The SX offers softer compounds for better traction in hard-packed conditions. The SI offers compounds for softer conditions like those found in cross country and hare scramble events. Lastly, the IT is an intermediate tire with rubber compounds for a variety of soil conditions.
