The KTM Dirt Bike: So What Does KTM Stand for Anyway?
If you own a KTM Dirt Bike you could be considered a “connoisseur” in the dirt bike world. Looking for the “finer things” are you? We thought we would give the “connoisseur’s” a page to show off there rides like everyone else. But first what the heck does “KTM” stand for? I bet most KTM owners have no idea! Founded in 1934 by Hans Trunkenpolz, an Austrian engineer, KTM started out as a metal working shop named Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. No wonder they went with KTM for short!

It wasn’t until 1953, with just 20 employees, that KTM started building motorcycles. In 1955, a businessman named Ernst Kronreif, notice the “K” in the last name, bought a sizable portion of the company and then renamed it to Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. Still can’t really put that on the gas tank! So yep, KTM still works!In the early years almost all components for the motorcycles were built in house by KTM. Being on the leading edge of technology KTM was the first manufacturer to design a liquid cooled four stroke off road motorcycle engine. In the early water cooled days KTM even supplied radiators to Suzuki.
